Holi is an Indian festival that is celebrated every year at the end of the Winters usually in the month of March after the full moon. Though India has a huge list of festivals and celebrations, the festival of colors is unique. It is a celebration of colors that erases all differences between people and religions by bringing society together.

The festival of colors has a legendary story behind it from Hindu scriptures. As per the Hindu scriptures, once upon a time, there lived a demon king called Hiranyakashyap, he considered himself a god and wanted everyone to believe it and worship him, however, his son, Prahlad refused to obey the instructions of his father, since he was a devotee of Lord Vishnu. Hiranyakashayap couldn’t digest this fact and being frustrated, he asked his sister Holika, to take Prahalad with her and enter a blazing fire. Holika was granted with a boon that she could never be destroyed or burned by fire and hence she was immune and Prahalad would get burnt in the fire. But when Holika entered the fire taking Prahalad with her, the Lord Vishnu protected Prahalad and Holika was burnt in the fire, since the boon was applicable only when she entered the fire alone. And since then, people started celebrating this festival by lighting a bonfire called Holika, to celebrate the victory of good over evil. And on the very next day, people play with different colors applying to each other signifying a colorful and bright life and that is the reason it is also called ‘Dulhandi’.
